My Story...why I will run 132K in 24 hours this New Years Eve.

In the past year, there were approximately 48,130 new cancer cases in the state of Georgia. That is 132 a day! Sadly, several individuals dear to me have been a part of those statistics.

I am sure that many of you have felt the frustration and helplessness that comes from watching a loved one go through the brutal cancer "journey". Many times, part of the frustration comes from that family member or friend not being able to receive adequate health care. Perhaps, due to their inability to work, there are significant struggles for them to pay for even the basic necessities. Cancer is all-encompassing and quickly invades all aspects of a patient's life.

Since 2002, the non-profit organization Henry County Cancer Services  has been dedicated to assisting local individuals, along with their families, whose lives have been wholly altered by cancer.  I am so impressed with their efforts and the fact that they are able to give 97% of the donations they receive directly to the individual needs of local cancer patients. The needs in our community, however, significantly outweigh their resources. That is why, in honor of the 132 individuals diagnosed in a day, I will run 132K in a day (from Milledgeville to McDonough) and with your help, raise as much money as possible. My hope is that we may assist Henry County Cancer Services in expanding their generous umbrella to cover more of our cancer-stricken community members. I want to make the miles count, and I know that together we can make a difference!

I will also be running in honor of those in my life that have been afflicted by some form of cancer this past year, along with any names of loved ones that are submitted. The names (and whatever other information you wish to share) of your loved one will be represented on an individual sign posted along the 132K route. Please click here to submit a name.
